Finnfund is a Finnish development financier and professional impact investor. We build a sustainable world by investing in responsible and profitable businesses in developing countries. Each year we invest 200–250 million euros in 20-30 projects, emphasising renewable energy, sustainable forestry, sustainable agriculture, financial institutions and digital infrastructure and solutions. Today Finnfund’s investments and commitments total about 1,07 billion euros, half of them in Africa. The company has about 90 employees.
We are now looking for an
Economist
for a full-time, permanent position in Helsinki.
What you will be doing
As an economist, you will have both an internal and external role: you will deepen our internal understanding of Finnfund’s target countries and represent Finnfund externally. You will report directly to the CEO but cooperate with colleagues from various internal functions such as investment, portfolio management, environmental & social and development impact.
The key areas of responsibility include:
- monitor the development of Finnfund’s target markets and share relevant analysis and information with sector teams, management, and Finnfund’s supervisory bodies
- develop internal tools, processes and skills in country and market analysis
- conduct country and market analysis for new investment opportunities
- provide project-specific analysis of relevant country and market risks (including political, macroeconomic, sovereign, FX, transfer, and convertibility risks)
- represent Finnfund externally at events, meetings, and media in your specialist area
- build and maintain relationships with experts, peers, investors, government ministries, and other stakeholders, and showcase Finnfund’s expertise of emerging markets with investors, media, and other external stakeholders
- provide relevant analysis for the CEO and management team in various strategic initiatives and business development activities.
What you will bring along
An ideal candidate should have a master’s degree in economics, development economics or equivalent analytical post-graduate degree with a minimum of 5 years of applicable professional experience from a financial institution, central bank, research institution, consultancy, or other relevant entity. International orientation is a prerequisite and practical experience from emerging markets and developing countries is considered an asset. Familiarity with international development issues and policies related to development cooperation, climate change as well as sustainable/impact investing frameworks is valuable for this position. The role requires excellent communication skills in English, while fluency in Finnish or other languages is considered an asset.

A successful candidate for this position is a social, self-starter with strong teamwork skills, and with strong analytical skills. We value the ability to combine analysis from various sources with expert qualitative judgment to provide insight into decision-making. You have great communication skills with the ability to synthesize and describe complex issues also to non-professionals. The role requires some amount of travel in Europe and Finnfund’s target countries.
